Key Events in President Franklin Pierce's Administration
• Kansas-Nebraska Act, 1854---This act repealed the Missouri Compromise, allowing settlers in the Kansas, Nebraska territories to decide for themselves whether to permit slavery. It led to a bloodyoutbreak in Kansas with casualties numbering 200. • Gadsden Purchase---The U.S. purchased 45,535 miles of land for $10 million. The land today now makes up southernmost Arizona and New Mexico.
