• Compromise of 1850—This compromise which Fillmore embraced allowed California to be admitted as a free state and enforced the Fugitive Slave Act with suspected fugitives being denied the right to a trial; it helped ward off the Civil War. • Perry’s Mission to Japan, 1852-1854—Matthew Perry, dispatched on a mission to Japan by Fillmore, was successful in opening two Japanese ports for American trade.
